HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
Dear Friends,
친애하는 동역자 여러분,
We trust that all of you enjoyed your celebration of our Lord's birth this past Christmas. Ours was wonderful with all our brothers and sisters of the Jesus Abbey community. I was asked to distribute Christmas stockings after our big Christmas breakfast. We gave our 180 stockings to all our members, the children and many guests who came to join our celebration. Our own daughter, Joanna, was with us from Biola University. We have enjoyed having her with us but our 6:30am Christmas service at the Abbey was almost too much. She thought we were kidding... Also the switch from sunny, warm Los Angeles to sunny but frigid Taebaek was quite a change for her.
여러분 모두 우리 주님의 탄생을 기념하며 크리스마스를 즐겁게 보내셨으리라 믿습니다. 예수원 공동체 모든 형제 자매들과 참으로 좋은 시간을 보냈습니다. 크리스마스 예배 후 멋진 아침식사를 마친 후 저는 크리스마스 선물이 든 양말을 나누어주었습니다. 우리 공동체 가족과 아이들을 비롯해서 오신 손님들에게 180여개의 양말을 주었습니다. 또 비올라 대학에 다니는 저희 딸 조애나가 와서 좋은 시간을 보내고 있습니다. 크리스마스 아침 예배가 새벽 6시 반에 있다고 했더니 처음에 조애나는 농담인 줄 알았습니다. 게다가 화창하고 따뜻한 로스 앤젤레스에서 태백의 얼어붙을 듯한 추운 날씨는 조애나에게 적응하기 쉽지는 않습니다.
It is winter! We really feel it here at the Three Seas Ranch situated at 1,000 meters (3,000 feet) elevation. We also get strong high winds as well that carry the cold deep into your bones. It was 5 degrees F or -15 C this morning. Yet, we praise God for all the beauty around us and the spectacular sunrises that we get most mornings. And, for mostly warm houses.
겨울입니다! 이곳 삼수령 목장이 해발 1,000미터에 있다는 걸 절로 실감하고 있습니다. 추위와 뼛속을 에는 듯 한 강풍으로 아침 최저기온은 영하 15도에 이릅니다. 하지만 하나님께서 날마다 아름다운 해돋이를 보여주시고, 모두들 따뜻한 실내에서 생활하고 있습니다.
However, we do ask your prayers for us living here and for our cattle. We've been plagued with freezing water pipes and our cows need a lot of water. Our brothers here at the ranch have been working hard in the cold to fix the problems. We all shouted praises to God when the water flowed again a few days ago.
목장에서 생활하는 지체들과 가축을 위해서 기도해 주시기 바랍니다. 소들을 위한 식수 공급이 원활하지 못합니다. 수도관이 추위로 자주 어는데, 소들은 여전히 많은 물을 필요로 합니다. 우리 형제들이 추운 날씨에도 여러 문제들을 해결하기 위해서 열심히 일하고 있습니다. 며칠 전에 물이 제대로 공급되었을 때 우리 모두는 소리쳐 하나님을 찬양했습니다.
While we have not been able to get permission from the Forestry Department (that owns the land we lease for the Ranch) to build the new houses that we need to replace our old, small and somewhat-the-worse-for-wear homes that we live in now, we were able to get new coal boilers for our little container home and the office building next door. Instead of sharing one inadequate boiler between the two buildings, we now have nice new ones that are making both buildings quite a bit warmer this year than last.
현재 삼수령 목장의 낡고 작은 집을 대체할 새로운 주택을 짓고자 하지만, 아직 산림청으로부터 허가를 받지 못하고 있습니다. 대신에 우리가 살고 있는 컨테이너 집과 사무실에 연탄 보일러를 교체했습니다. 보일러 한 대로 컨테이너 집과 사무실이 있는 컨테이너를 감당했는데, 각각 보일러를 설치해서 전보다 훨씬 따뜻해졌습니다.

The students are coming!
학생들이 오고 있습니다.
We plan to open school in March with a total of 15 students between 1st and 2nd year of middle school. While we are not at that number yet, we are getting a steady stream of applications. Many are local (up to a 40 minute drive away) but a surprising number are from far away. People are desperate for a good alternative, a solid Christian education for their children; so much so that they are making serious sacrifices to come. One family has still not found a house to rent or buy near enough to the school but they are coming anyway. The father even quit his job in Seoul in order to move here. We have been really impressed by the spirit and caliber of the families that are coming to join us. Praise God! Do pray for this registration process that is going on during January and for arrangements for those who want to come from other parts of the country.
내년 3월 개교를 앞두고 중등 1, 2학년 과정으로 15명의 학생을 모집하고 있습니다. 아직 많은 수가 지원한 것은 아니지만, 꾸준히 지원서가 들어오고 있습니다. 대부분은 태백시내(학교에서 대략 40분 소요) 학생들이지만 놀랍게도 멀리서 오는 학생도 있습니다. 자녀들을 위해 건전하고 좋은 기독교 대안 교육을 갈망하는 학부모들이 희생을 무릅쓰고 지원하고 있습니다. 한 가정은 아직 적당한 집을 구하지 못했음에도 불구하고 이사를 결정하고 지원서를 냈습니다. 심지어 학생의 아버지는 이사를 위해서 서울에서 다니던 직장도 그만둔 상태입니다. 이 가족의 열의와 태도로 인해 큰 감명을 받고 있습니다. 할렐루야! 1월중에 이루어지는 모든 입학 전형 과정과 먼 곳에 이곳으로 오는 가정의 필요를 위해서 기도해 주시기 바랍니다.
Our teachers are busily engaged in developing our curriculum even as we are working out heat and furniture for the school rooms. This is definitely a pioneering effort. We are constantly called on to exhibit pioneering spirit as we prepare for our first year.
선생님들은 모두 바쁘게 교육과정을 계발하는 일에 전념하는 동시에 교실에 필요한 난방과 가구를 위해서도 일하고 있습니다. 모든 일이 전적으로 새롭고, 개교 첫해를 위해서 끊임없이 개척정신을 발휘해야 하는 상황입니다.
We still have a need for permanent living quarters for our two women teachers. Jesus Abbey is providing temporary space for the teachers until February. This gives us a little breathing space (but not much!) to find something more permanent. So far, we have not been able to find any real possibilities close to the school. We are still looking!
여전히 두 명의 여선생님들을 위한 영구적인 숙소를 마련할 필요가 있습니다. 예수원에서 2월까지 임시로 숙소를 제공해줘서 잠시 숨을 돌리고 있긴 하지만 영구적이진 않습니다. 지금까지 학교 근처에서는 마땅한 곳을 찾지 못했습니다만, 계속 구하고 있습니다.
Last month, I mentioned all the little darts that the enemy was throwing our way. This month, despite seasonal hardships, we are feeling the protection, love and warmth of our Heavenly Father. This is His work, not ours. He is providing and will provide all that is needed. Thank you, Lord.
지난 달, 우리의 원수가 우리의 일을 방해하기 위해서 화살을 쏘고 있다고 말씀드렸습니다. 이번 달에는 계절 변화에 따른 어려움에도 불구하고 우리 모두는 하나님 아버지로부터 오는 보호와 사랑과 온화함을 느끼고 있습니다. 우리의 일이 아니라 그분의 일임이 분명합니다. 모든 필요에 대해 아버지께서 채워주고 계십니다. 주님께 감사를 드립니다.

Please keep us in mind as we continue to plan and launch our capital campaign. We are most grateful for office space that is being provided for us at no cost in Seoul and some seed money that will enable us to hire a full-time person to handle all the details of developing and running such a campaign. Pray that we find the right person for this task--someone who has a good knowledge of both English and Korean, good administrative skills and is able to represent us well to others.
자금 마련을 위한 홍보계획을 세우는 일을 계속 하도록 지원해주시기 바랍니다. 서울에 사무소를 낼 수 있도록 무상으로 장소를 지원받았고, 또한 자금 모금등을 위한 세부적인 일을 감당할 한 분 정도 전임 근무자를 고용할 수 있는 정도 종자돈도 마련했습니다. 영어와 국어가 능통한 동시에 우리를 대표해서 행정적인 일을 잘 감당할 수 있는 적절한 사람을 구할 수 있도록 기도해 주시기 바랍니다.
