The River of Life School
We have been getting a lot of interest in the River of Life School. At the beginning of April, Liz Torrey (our principal) gave a short talk on it at our monthly Prepared People meeting in Taebaek. An announcement of that meeting was posted on the Korean language Jesus Abbey web site. We received several calls from people in Seoul wondering if they could come to the meeting. We quickly let them know that it was going to be only a brief introduction and not worth the four hour trip and overnight stay that would be required. In response to this interest, we decided to schedule an informational meeting in Seoul at our first opportunity. We had that meeting on the evening of Friday, April 24th. About 35 people attended including a reporter from the Christian daily, Kookmin Ilbo. His report came out yesterday and we have been deluged with phone calls all day long from people asking about the school, when they can enroll their children, and so forth. There is an enormous interest in quality Christian Education. We see parents hungry for something that they can trust and many look to Jesus Abbey as being able to provide that.

Because of this intense interest, I would like to take a few moments to reiterate a few things about the school, especially for those who may not have received earlier newsletters.

The River of Life School, operated by the the Three Seas Community at Jesus Abbey's Three Seas Ranch, is scheduled to open in March of 2010 with 1st and 2nd year of middle school. At that stage, we will not have dormitory facilities so will limit attendance to day students only from Jesus Abbey and the city of Taebaek. The following year we will add the 3rd year of middle school. Up to that point, the school will be using the vacated Hasami village school. We have permission to use that building until 2012 at which point we will outgrow it in any case and have to move to newly built facilities at the Three Seas. We need to raise startup funds for the school and about $3 million for the new buildings. Please pray for God's provision for this.

The mission of the River of Life School is to prepare the "Unification Generation." We will be educating our young people from a Biblical world view. We will emphasize such things as understanding the history that has led to this present situation with a divided Korea and look at what God's plan for the future of this nation might be. All subjects will be taught in an integrated format with at strong emphasis on team work. We will also be building on the history and tradition of Jesus Abbey that emphasizes physical labor, community and prayer. Of course, we will take full advantage of this wonderful location as we teach science and about God's creation. It is a place where you can see for miles and where young people will find their minds filled with big thoughts and new possibilities.

I've already indicated some of our funding needs. We also need your prayers! We are in a process of selecting teachers and developing the curriculum. This will require great wisdom on our part. Pray that we have the wisdom needed and that God will send us the partners to join in this work. And, certainly, if you are interested in possibly joining us in this work, send me an email and let me know.

Summer Program
(This is repeated from last month.)

We have a rough outline of our summer program worked out with several sessions for specific groups. Here is the general schedule:

July 23-25: Special closed session for young leadership development.
July 27-30: Open--Youth session for middle and high school age
July 31-August 2: Special closed session for young leadership development.

August 4-6: Special River of Life School family session for parents and students from Jesus Abbey and Taebaek who are considering attending the school. (Because the school will start out as a day school only, we will not be accepting any applicants from outside the immediate area for the first two years.)

August 10-14: Special closed high school session.
August 17-20: Open--General session for college age and adults.

You can see it will be a busy summer! We will need your prayers as we prepare and then carry it out. We have been facing increasing demand for special sessions where an organization will reserve the whole period and bring a group of 20 to 30 participants. Because of this, we have only two sessions open to the general public as indicated above. We will be sending out detailed announcements about these session in the future. If you are interested in participating, save the dates and stay on the look out for the official announcement and enrollment details.

We thank all of you for your support through your prayers and contributions. Every note we get is a great encouragement. Thank you!

In His Name,
Ben Torrey,
Director
